Advances in Solar Design to Provide Power for Cell Phones
While hands-free cell phones have been commonplace for some time, a new technology could make cell phone batteries a thing of the past.
WYSIPS, a company based in Aix en Provence, France, recently introduced the world’s first transparent photovoltaic film. Photovoltaics (PV) is a method of generating electrical power by converting solar radiation into direct current electricity using semiconductors. While PV panels on cell phones are not new, this technology adds a new twist.
According to the company, the new PV film is flexible and free from size constraints. Much like a clear film, the new PV film can be applied to nearly any electronic device. It also is compatible with touch-screen applications used on cell phones, tablet computers and much more. While the device will not be able to generate enough energy to completely do without a battery, it likely will significantly increase the time between necessary charges.
Just consider the broader applications beyond smart phones – homes, offices, cars, mass transit, parking meters – you name it. Best of all, the original surface would remain intact and ready to generate power.
This technology, which could begin to enter the marketplace in 12 months or less, could revolutionize the way we live.
Best of all, the cost to incorporate the PV film into a standard smart phone or tablet would be minimal – about $1.00.
