Brazilian designer João Lammoglia has created an ingenious device to produce clean, alternative energy. He named it AIRE and it can convert human breathing into electricity to power small gadgets.

The device is actually a mask featuring minuscule wind turbines. These transform the air we breathe out into energy, which is then transferred to an iPod, a GPS or a cell phone, to name but a few, through a USB cable.

Lammoglia says AIRE could be used anywhere: on the bus, while jogging, or even sleeping (that’s what we call multitasking!). All you need to do is to ignore the curious looks from other people who may be left wondering what the hell you’re wearing!

For now AIRE is still a concept, one which has made Lammoglia into the winner of the Best of the Best 2011 Design award, dished out by Red Dot. But the designer has plans to take his product to market.

We hope he does because it sounds really viable and fun, too.
