The end of subsidies for fossil fuels was one of the big topics at Rio+20. One of the businessman to support initiative was Virgin founder Richard Branson.

He said getting ridding of all subsidies of fossil fuels would be one of the most useful outcomes of the Rio+20. “That would be the biggest boost for the clean fuel industry,” he told Green Biz.

An alternative energy future is possible and I’m not saying it. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has released a report called Renewable Electricity Futures Study (RE Futures) in which it claims that it is possible to get 50 percent of our energy from renewable sources with technologies that we already have or, at least, without any major breakthroughs.

The report was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and features collaborations from more than 110 contributors from 35 organizations including national laboratories, industry, universities, and non-governmental organizations. Article by Antonio Pasolini, a Brazilian writer and video art curator based in London, UK. He holds a BA in journalism and an MA in film and television.

One Comment to “Richard Branson on Clean Energy”

  • Jay Rosenberg, CEO says:

We have a high efficiency, inexpensive, multifuel (fossil, renewable, syn, algoils,… ) turbine (RET, working name) to replace less efficient more costly reciprocals and turbines. Our business plans call for on-site 24×7 natural gas RET gensets to provide steeply discounted (upwards of 40%) electricity. It is not the technology, rather access to decision makers and getting past their palace guards. RET is a paradigm change for energy generation, and transportation (autos, buses, trucks, trains, tractors, marine…) , conferring benefits to the consumers not the middle(wo)men. Anyone know how to give an abstract to Sir Richard? Sannerwind@gmail.com
