The winds of change are blowing strong in Spain. According to the Spanish Wind Energy Association (AEE), in January the country produced more than six terawatts of wind power, according to data released by grid operator Red Electrica de Espana.

It was the culmination of a three-month trend started in November, when wind power became the top source of energy in the country. It represents more than a quarter of Spain’s total energy output, beating coal and nuclear. Investments in wind power are part of the government’s drive to cut emissions.

Some of the latest data released by AEE shows the wind industry installed 413 MW in Spain in the first half of 2012. On June 30 the country’s total wind power capacity stood at 22,087 MW.
