In April, California made another big leap ahead in the clean energy race. At a solar panel factory in Milpitas, with Dept of Energy Secretary Steven Chu joining him on stage, Governor Jerry Brown signed legislation making the 33%-by-2020 Renewable Portfolio Standard(RPS) the law of the land. The competition in cleantech between the U.S. and China is heating up. In a press release issued last month, China’s state owned State Grid Corporation of China estimated that accommodated wind power will exceed 90 GW by 2015 and 150 GW by 2020.

Though the Obama Administration has taken some serious steps to help accelerate the market for offshore wind power in the United States, a new report from Pike Research reveals that it is Europe that is in the driver’s seat, and that China is the other prime contender for world leader over the next decade.

Wind power can now supply 10 million American homes, says a new report by the American Wind Power Association.
The organization says the industry installed 1,100 MW of new wind power capacity in the first quarter of 2011 and entered the second quarter with another 5,600 MW under construction. (more…)

A new report forecasts that offshore wind capacity worldwide will increase by a factor of 17 over the next six years, rising from 4.1 gigawatts of installed capacity today to a projected 70.1 gigawatts in 2017.

What is a wake? It is small island in the Pacific. However, in this case it is the region of recirculating air flow immediately behind a moving solid body, caused by the air flow of surrounding air around the wind turbine. The Energy Technologies Institute has completed its third offshore wind energy project, has found that offshore wind energy costs could be cut 30% or more, and intends to build an innovative offshore wind demonstrator project this year.
