NASA Satellite Images Reveal Dramatic Increase in Air Pollution Over China

Thursday, January 17th, 2013

NASA’s Terra satellite acquired natural-color images of northeastern China on January 3 and January 14, highlighting a drastic shift in air quality for the region.

According to the images, the opaque, gray areas are clouds or fog, which are saturated with a gray or yellow tint as a result from the air pollution. (more…)

Methane Leak Data Highlights Concerns About Natural Gas Drilling

Monday, January 7th, 2013

A pair of ongoing studies show unexpectedly high methane leakage from some oil and gas fields in the U.S., findings that underscore concerns that the climate benefits of the natural gas boom may be overstated.

Researchers from the University of Colorado at (more…)

Network of Smartphone-Based Sensors Monitor Air Pollution Levels

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2013

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego have developed a network of smartphone-based air pollution monitors that allow individuals to track pollution levels in real time and feed a central database of air quality trends citywide throughout the day.

The so-called CitySense devices are equipped with sensors that measure ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and (more…)

NOx Removal with Paint

Friday, December 21st, 2012

NOx is a pollutant that comes from all combustion emissions. It can be minimized but not eliminated at the stack. Painted surfaces (a very common urban surface area) with photo-catalytic characteristics may be able to clean the air of nitrogen oxides and other health-endangering substances. Using a new testing procedure, Fraunhofer researchers can find out how (more…)

Scientists Develop Standardized Analysis of City Pollution Emissions

Thursday, November 29th, 2012

A team of Israeli researchers has developed a method to track pollution over the world’s mega-cities, a satellite-based process they say could help hold nations accountable for their pollution and promote cleaner industrial practices.

Using data collected by three NASA satellite systems, the researchers from Tel Aviv University (more…)

Speed Limits on Cargo Ships Could Reduce their Pollutants by More than Half

Thursday, November 1st, 2012

Putting a speed limit on cargo ships as they sail near ports and coastlines could cut their emission of air pollutants by up to 70 percent, reducing the impact of marine shipping on Earth’s climate and human health, scientists have found. Their evaluation of the impact of vessel speed reduction policies, such as those proposed by the California Air Resources Board, (more…)

Plastic Waste Increasing on Remote Arctic Seabed, Cameras Reveal

Thursday, October 25th, 2012

Deep-sea cameras deployed to monitor biodiversity on the Arctic seabed have documented a significant rise in the amount of plastic waste and other litter on the remote sea floors of the Far North, according to a new study.

While looking at many thousands of seabed photos (more…)

New Cleanup Method Offers Major Solution to Oil Spills, Study Claims

Friday, October 5th, 2012

Scientists have developed a superabsorbent material they say offers a cost-effective way to remove, recover and clean up large oil spills.

Writing in the journal Energy & Fuels, Pennsylvania State University researchers Xuepei Yuan and T. C. Mike Chung describe a polymer material that they (more…)

Air Pollution Exceeds International Health Standards for European Urbanites

Monday, September 24th, 2012

There are many ways to harm your respiratory system such as smoking or breathing in asbestos. For urbanites living in cities across Europe, merely living and breathing in the city can be bad. A new study released by the European Environment Agency (EEA) found that most residents of European cities breathe toxic pollutants exceeding international health standards. The most (more…)
