A new plant in Glendale, Arizona promises to triple the amount of trash the city recycles each year when it begins operations in April. Recycling is gradually being recognized as an easy way for people to reduce their environmental impact. In many cities around the world, recycling is now required by law, and as a result, cities such as San Francisco, CA recycle over 70% of their trash. Government policy has clearly played a major role in developing recycling programs. In addition, new recycling technologies have helped to lower the cost of recycling items such as plastic bottles and aluminum cans. Unfortunately, most cities around the world do not yet have recycling programs, and more will need to be done.
The volume of electronic waste generated worldwide is expected to climb by 33 percent by 2017 to 65 million tons, according to a study conducted by a partnership of United Nations organizations, industry, governments, and scientists.
