The BMW i3 represents one of the biggest parts of the manufacturer’s Project i series, which is focusing on electric city cars. In the 2011 film Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Tom Cruise is upstaged by BMW’s new star supercar, the i8 plug-in hybrid. The winged-door i8 accelerates from zero to 60 miles in less than five seconds—and is capable of a top speed of around 155 miles per hour. BMW is seeking 700 so-called “electronauts” to test a fleet of 2012 BMW Active E vehicles. While BMW is not shy of flaunting the phrase “ultimate driving machine”, one would not necessarily attach that phrase to the auto industry’s current crop of electric vehicles.
