Grassland Carbon Storage

Thursday, December 6th, 2012

Plants “breathe in” CO2 and create biological mass. This is a form of sequestration. Forests, grasslands and shrublands and other ecosystems in the West sequester nearly 100 million tons of carbon each year, according to a Department of the Interior recent report. Grasslands occur naturally on all continents except Antarctica. In temperate (more…)

Forest Carbon Loss

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

The carbon cycle is a complex thing. There is carbon in the air (carbon dioxide), carbon in plants and animals, dissolved carbon in the sea and carbon in the soil that is constantly circulating to and from. Elevated levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide may accelerate carbon cycling and soil carbon loss in forests, as found in new research led by an Indiana University (more…)

Biofuels Viability

Monday, June 11th, 2012

What is green? What is a viable economic alternative? What is reasonable and will do more bad than good? Welcome to Biofuels. Two scientists are challenging the currently accepted norms of biofuel production. A commentary published today in GCB Bioenergy reveals that calculations of greenhouse gas (GHGs) (more…)

Amazon Drought Released More CO2 than India’s Annual Emissions

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

A drought that affected large areas of the Amazon rainforest in 2010 triggered the release of about 1.8 million tons of carbon dioxide, more than the total annual CO2 emissions of India, according to a new study.

After combining a NASA carbon cycle simulation (more…)
