A data center has a massive demand for electricity to run all of its servers 24/7/365. A typical data center uses the same amount of electricity to run the servers as it does to run the air conditioning to keep those servers cool enough to function.

It’s always interesting to see a project you’ve been tracking for some time come to fruition. I’ve been following Verne Global, and its plans for a data center campus in Iceland, for almost two years, so it was rewarding to see its progress first-hand at the official launch event last month. Internet search giant Google says that it consumed about 2.26 billion kilowatt hours of electricity last year, equal to the energy used in 200,000 homes.
But while that represents an enormous amount of energy, Google says the services supported by its expanding data centers reduce energy use globally (more…)

Computer hardware makers AMD and Hewlett-Packard announced today that they would work with New York state and a local university on a $674,000 effort to help data centers use more wind and solar power.

The rapid growth of cloud computing could reduce energy usage in the global information technology industry by 38 percent by 2020, according to a new report. Cloud computing refers to Internet-based computing in which data and applications are shared between computers on demand, rather than hosted on a separate server. (more…)
