But any 117-year old bridge is bound to need a few updates here and there. The latest round of improvements will help cut the amount of energy required to light the landmark by 40 percent.

There’s no denying that London Bridge is an icon–a song praising its usefulness in times of conflict is sung to children before they can walk. But in recent iterations, the bridge has incorporated inefficient technologies that mar its noble history.

It was over 25 years ago that the London Bridge lighting system, used to illuminate the landmark at night, was last upgraded. But GE and its UK partner EDF Energy recently received a formal approval to retrofit the 800-foot bridge with new energy efficient LED technology and a cabling system that will bring it into the 21st century with style.

The new system is designed to enhance the architectural features of the 117-year old bridge. GE’s multi-color LEDs with variable intensity will illuminate the bridge’s Victorian gothic turrets, granite and stone towers as well as an aerial walkway and suspension chains. Kinga Kalocsai of GE Lighting says that the new lighting will “emphasize the lines of force” of the bridge. “The light will reveal the tonalities in harmony with the architecture of the structure,” says Kalocsai.

Look for the new LED lighting to be on display during the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to be held in the British capital next summer.

While that legal battle spans multiple venues, encompasses several different patents, and includes many patent and antitrust issues, the heart of the dispute is the allegation that Mitsubishi’s 2.4 MW turbine infringes GE’s patented technologies.

More particularly, GE has asserted infringement of its patented variable speed technology, particularly as claimed in U.S. Patent No. 5,083,039, a seminal patent relating to methods for enabling turbines to efficiently feed power from wind of variable speeds into the utility grid.

Another key patent asserted by GE is U.S. Patent No. 7,321,221, relating to low voltage ride through technology for stabilizing the supply voltage to a wind turbine after voltage drops without jeopardizing the electrical components of the turbine.

In its antitrust case against GE, Mitsubishi has alleged that GE’s patent infringement claims are baseless and are intended to intimidate Mitsubishi’s potential customers.

According to Mitsubishi, its $2 billion in annual U.S. sales of variable speed wind turbines has dropped to zero since initiation of the first patent infringement suit in early 2008.

In a glimmer of good news for Mitsubishi, Windpower Monthly recently reported that at least one customer is undeterred by the cloud over Mitsubishi’s 2.4 MW turbine.

According to the article, the utility Duke Energy has ordered 202 MW of the controversial turbines for its Los Vientos II wind project in Texas. The article says it is the first order since the advent of the patent dispute with GE.

It will be interesting to see if this vote of confidence by Duke clears away the cloud over Mitsubishi’s 2.4 MW turbine and leads to more orders.

Apparently, this is a question on a number of people’s minds; each of the VCs at the New York Venture Summit last week was asked to comment on it.

I don’t see it. GE and Siemens achieved combined top-line revenues of over $30 billion in 2010 in this space, and continue to invest huge resources so as to “own the world” as it goes green; you can be sure that no one there is too concerned about a bubble.

The way I look at it, clean tech is in its infancy, the way the Internet was 15 years ago. When will it explode? I can’t say, but I recall those early days of the Internet, as it bopped along for a few years, then went right through the roof. You’ll see something quite similar here.

And here’s the reason – as I was explaining to a client this morning: why do we need products and services that provide sustainability? Because what we’re doing now isn’t sustainable. It’s that simple. Many of our current practices can’t last – even if we want them to.

The boom will be as considerable as it is inevitable.

The good news is this campaign to make the Empire State a real solar powerhouse has been moving at a furious pace. As we count down those final days, here is a quick list of our Top 5 Solar Jobs Act highlights:

5. Reality TV’s sunniest bachelor shows that solar is New York’s perfect match. REC Solar’s Ryan Park takes a break from wooing this season’s bachelorette to support a solar powered New York. If state government was reality TV, the New York Solar Jobs Act would get our rose in a heartbeat.

4. Some of the biggest names in business say “yes” to NY solar. Wal-Mart, GE, Dow, and Staples join well over 100 other businesses, trade organizations, environmental groups, and public health advocates in submitting official memos of support for the bill.

3. Solar goes to Broadway. We gave the New York Solar Jobs Act its rightful place in the spotlight with a digital billboard in Times Square. To show lawmakers just how serious New Yorkers are about solar, we encouraged members to submit their own solar-friendly photos for a chance to see shine in Broadway’s bright lights.

2. There’s real momentum in Albany. The New York Solar Jobs Act successfully passed the energy committees in *both* the Senate and Assembly. All told, more than 65 lawmakers from upstate, downstate and both sides of the aisle have signed on as sponsors or co-sponsors.

And the number one development in this campaign … [drum roll]

1. New Yorkers like you all over the state take action to let their representative know … “It’s time to go solar.”

Your calls, letters and emails may seem like simple things, but tallied together they make all the difference. Especially in these precious final days of the legislative calendar. So speak up and make sure you let your elected officials know that you want them to pass the New York Solar Jobs Act today!

Vote Solar is a non-profit grassroots organization working to fight climate change and foster economic opportunity by bringing solar energy into the mainstream.

In that suit, GE has accused Wilkins, an electrical engineer who had worked for Enron Wind and then GE after it acquired Enron, of breaching his employment agreements with both companies by his actions with respect to U.S. Patent Nos. 6,924,565 (’565 Patent) and 6,921,985 (’985 Patent).

The ’985 Patent relates to a blade pitch control system, and the ’565 Patent relates to power control systems for wind turbines.

GE alleges that Wilkins refused to assist in the prosecution of the application that matured into the ’565 Patent, recently asserted an ownership interest in and offered to license the ’565 Patent on a publicly-available web site, and recently asserted an ownership interest in and offered to license the ’985 Patent to Mitsubishi (ge-wilkins_am_complaint.pdf).

In an Opinion and Order decided earlier this month (GE-Wilkins_Opinion), Judge Oliver Wanger held that the technology of the ’565 and ’985 Patents presumptively belongs to GE because Wilkins conceived the inventions while working as an employee of GE for the purpose of developing the technology and “being paid to invent.”

Although Wilkins did some development work as an employee of Enron, the court found no evidence that the scope of his job duties changed when he transferred from Enron to GE.

Therefore, the court concluded that Wilkins likely does not own the patents-at-issue:

Based on the current record, it does not appear that Defendant has rights in the subject technology sufficient to permit Defendant to license the technology to Plaintiff’s competitors.

Judge Wanger granted GE’s motion for a preliminary injunction and ordered Wilkins to stop licensing or offering to license the ’565 and ’985 Patents until the lawsuit is resolved or the court decides otherwise:

For the reasons stated, Defendant Thomas Wilkins and those acting in concert with him, and those who have actual notice of this order, are enjoined and restricted from licensing or offering to license any interest in the technology described in the ’565 and ’985 patents, or from making any representation that Wilkins is presently legally entitled to license such technology, pending the entry of a final judgment in this action or further order of the court.

Mitsubishi has intervened in the case. The ’985 Patent is one of several asserted by GE against Mitsubishi in at least two lawsuits, including a patent infringement case in Texas and an investigation in the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), for which GE is appealing the ITC’s ruling. Among other things, Wilkins’ inventive contributions to the ’985 Patent were at issue in the ITC case.

The ’985 Patent is also one of the patents-at-issue in Mitsubishi’s antitrust suit against GE, in which it has accused its rival of engaging in an anticompetitive scheme to monopolize the U.S. market for variable speed wind turbines. The antitrust suit has been stayed pending resolution of the patent infringement suits.

It is interesting that long-time Siemens AG wind turbine technology thought leader, Henrik Stiesdal is listed as a co-inventor on these patents, highlighting the commercial relationships with Siemens for their 3MW direct drive wind turbine technology.

With a cross license arrangement on key generator, converter and controls technology between Siemens AG and Converteam, this deal now provides GE with access to IP rights which they may need to continue operating their own technology.

In addition, Converteam has their own flavor of a variable speed control patent with U.S. Patent No. 7,405,490 (‘490 Patent) in which adjustment of active power output from the generator is based on input from the DC to AC inverter which is connected to the power grid.

In light of the expiration of GE’s noteworthy and heavily litigated U.S. Patent No. 5,083,039 relating to variable speed control with an induction generator, the ‘490 Patent may be part of a suite of patents which helps GE protect the next generation of variable speed technology.

Converteam also has some patents relating to grid interconnection and generator technology. U.S. Patent No. 7,471,532 is directed to a more efficient converter which requires fewer parts than the previous generation of technology.

The move towards medium voltage on the power grid has been part of the emerging trends for the industry in the hopes of providing more efficient transmission of energy.

U.S. Patent No. 7,675,271 deals with generator technology which helps the generator ramp up from standstill. U.S. Patent No. 7,768,169, entitled “Magnet retaining arrangement,” and U.S. Patent No. 7,714,473, entitled “Electrical machines with reduced cogging,” both deal with permanent magnet generator technology which helps to enhance efficiency and improve reliability.

Converteam also recently announced that they are developing a superconducting generator, which they have termed HYDROGENIE for the hydro-power market. According to a February 21st press release (Converteam_Release) the company has successfully completed some basic testing of this technology and are moving towards full scale testing of a 1.7MW generator later this year.

The superconducting generator technology is likely to be the subject of numerous patents and is also highly likely to be leveraged into their other lines of business, such as wind generators and propulsion.

This acquisition is a notable example of the previously identified trend in the wind industry for “grid friendly” wind turbines which utilize permanent magnet synchronous generators as well as full power conversion with the ability to control power factor and provide VARs to the grid.

With the Converteam patent portfolio, GE has now added to their 300+ patents in the wind sector with key technology that further strengthens their position in these future technology areas.

GE is considering several locations for the 400-megawatt plant, which would begin producing thin-film photovoltaic panels, made of cadmium telluride, by 2013.

Although less efficient than conventional solar panels, the technology lends itself to low-cost, high-volume production and has proven to be popular with developers and utilities operating large-scale solar plants.

At capacity, the GE facility would produce enough solar panels to power 80,000 homes annually, company officials said. “We are addressing the biggest barrier for the mainstream adoption of solar technology: cost,” said Victor Abate, vice president of GE’s renewable energy business.

The Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory recently certified the thin-film panel at a 12.8 percent aperture area efficiency, compared with 16 to 20 percent efficiency for conventional panels.

General Electric will be supplying 338 of its 2.5xl wind turbines to the project, which have not yet been utilized within North America until now.

8 ) Smart Grid Technology Center of Excellence. The GE Energy Smart Grid Technology Center of Excellence, located in Atlanata, GA, is responsible for developing smart grid technology to markets around the world. The Center also manages the research and development of new technology for power plant automation, monitoring electrical grids and full integration of an energy internet. The solutions developed at the Center will build in efficiencies to optimize the resources of power plants, conserve natural resources and ultimately reduce electricity rates for industry and consumers.

9) WattStation. GE’s electric vehicle charger, GE WattStation, was released and designed to help decrease time needed for vehicle charging, and using smart grid technology to allow utility companies to manage the impact Electric Vehicles have on the local and regional grids. A commercial and residential station are now available.

10) Renewable Energy Global Headquarters in New York. In 2010, General Electric dedicated $45 million to the creation of their Renewable Energy Global Headquarters located in Schenectady, New York. These headquarters created over 650 new jobs and marked General Electric’s installation of the 13,5000th wind turbine around the globe. The headquarters meet the United States’ Green Building Council’s LEED green building standards and will be more energy efficient that the standard set up by the State of New York. The headquarters is also home to the Remote Operations Center – one of only two facilities around the globe providing diagnostic and monitoring services for installed base of solar power electronics and wind turbines.

Wind Tower is a Park City, Utah, company that designs towers for mounting utility scale wind turbines. While most existing utility-scale wind turbine towers stand at 65-70 meters, the company’s modular tower technology and lift system enable taller towers (100 meters high).

As this Greentech Media piece notes, taller towers permit longer turbine blades, which means more power per turbine.

Wind Tower’s product offerings include the Space Frame Tower and the Hi-Jack System for assembly and disassembly. The company owns at least one U.S. Patent and several U.S. patent applications relating to its tower structure and lift system technology.

U.S. Patent Application Publication No. 2010/0226785 (’785 Application) is entitled “Structural tower” and is directed to a wind tower assembly that includes composite damping members or struts to dampen wind-induced vibrations in the tower structure. Embodiments of damping members contemplated by the ’785 Application include a viscous or hydraulic damper and a spring element.

The Hi-Jack System is protected U.S. Patent No. 7,877,934 (’934 Patent), which issued last month. Entitled “Lifting system and apparatus for constructing wind turbine towers,” the ’934 Patent is directed to apparatus and methods for erecting a wind tower and turbine assembly.

The lifting apparatus (320) includes a pair of hydraulic rams (370) connected to telescoping members (375) of each of first and second lifting trusses (330, 331) via each hydraulic ram’s cylinder unit (371). When the hydraulic rams (370) are retracted, the transverse beam (345) is positioned fore of the top bay assembly (317).

According to the ’934 Patent this position facilitates hoisting of a turbine, after which the hydraulic rams (370) are extended, causing the lifting apparatus (320) to pivot. This raises the transverse beam (345) above the top bay assembly (317) to a position where the turbine can be lowered and secured to the top bay assembly.

U.S. Patent Application Publication No. 2010/0236161 (’161 Application) focuses on the hoisting part of the process. The ’161 Application is entitled “Lifting system and apparatus for constructing and enclosing wind turbine towers” and is directed to Wind Tower’s gin pole lifting component.

According to the ’161 Application, a ginpole (601) can be used together with the lift apparatus (660) to lift or control the lift of the turbine or blade assembly (675) and can be used raise or lower the lifting apparatus (660) itself.

With GE scooping up Wind Tower’s IP relating to wind turbine assembly technology, Philip Totaro’s wind patent trendspotting piece predicting the increased importance of “‘on-site’ assembly procedures” looks very prescient.

Toyota and a growing number of electrical heavyweights including Siemens and GE are jumping into an industry of many small and medium-sized companies. And because of the sheer size, brand recognition and distribution networks that these new players bring to the table, the cottage industry surrounding electric car chargers is about to get a serious shock to its system.

“It will be a challenge for the smaller players to compete with the likes of GE and Siemens, which have extensive experience in reducing manufacturing costs as well as understanding of relationships in the building power market,” says John Gartner of cleantech research firm Pike Research in The Wall St. Journal.

Toyota’s electric car-charger, which will reportedly cost about two thousand dollars installed, won’t be available until 2012, when the plug-in hybrid Prius and a small all-electric car hit Japanese and U.S. markets. But with companies like GE planning to deliver its first charger, the WattStation (pictured above) this summer, and Siemens readying to launch their residential electric car charging solution, the Siemens Charge, later this year, a cramped market ecosystem consisting of start-ups and relative unknowns is about to get even more cramped, which is all good news for consumers as competition should drive charger prices down.

In the short term, the hope is that all these new chargers, networks and platforms — from companies like Ecotality, Coulomb, Better Place, NRG Energy, GridBot, Clipper Creek and Silver Spring Networks, along with those produced by larger companies like AeroVironment, makers of those nifty rooftop wind turbines and most of the U.S. military’s unmanned drone aircraft, Eaton, Leviton, and Schneider Electric, which just launched its own residential charger last week — will bring the price of residential chargers down into the $700 range. But in the longer term, not only will all that competition in an uncertain market drive charger price down, analysts also predict there will be an active merger and acquisition environment.

“Some of those companies that are early movers are going to find it difficult to survive. We think there will be some interesting merger and acquisition activity at the end of this year,” says Pike Research’s Gartner.

And with some big-time names now positioning themselves in the charging sector, it will be interesting to see how it all shakes out and which big names in electronics, energy management, electric utilities and vehicle manufacturing get into the charging business.
