New Turbine for Low Wind Sites

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

Wind density is an issue for the wind power industry. The windier the site, the higher the energy output will be. But a new product, launched at the EWEA 2012 in Copenhagen, promises to achieve maximum returns from low-wind sites. The makers hope it will become a benchmark in the industry thanks to its low power (more…)

Interest in Small Wind Energy Grows

Monday, September 12th, 2011

Small wind generation with vertical axis turbines, also known as VAWT, is one of the most exciting recent developments in small scale alternative energy generation.

Last week we caught wind that Sauer Energy, which develops VAWT systems, has attracted huge interest (more…)

Wind Farms with Compressed Air Energy Storage

Friday, March 4th, 2011

I’ve added a hot new business plan to the list I’m now featuring. I spoke yesterday with Joe Speace, CEO of “Project Renewable Energy” near Kansas City, whose raising capital for a wind farm that will feature compressed air energy storage (CAES). This looks quite strong.

Storage will be a big deal soon, as the (more…)

Sauer Energy Unveils Prototype Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

The image most people have in their minds when they think of wind turbines are the big, white horizontal-axis wind turbines with their massive blades spinning slowly on a wind-swept plain. But the clean energy revolution–if, in fact, it is a revolution–has room for more than just one design of wind turbine.

But vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) are poised to (more…)

CEC Approves First Utility Solar Project in 20 Years

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

After years of delay, things are finally heating up for large-scale solar thermal power plants in California’s remote deserts. In the last month, a California Energy Commission (CEC) siting committee has recommended at least five solar plants for approval. Last week the first of these projects gained official go-ahead from the agency. The Beacon Solar Energy project (more…)

Australia to Build Largest Wind Farm in Southern Hemisphere

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Australian officials plan to build a 140-turbine wind farm in Victoria, the nation’s most densely populated state, by 2013, a billion-dollar project that would be the largest in the Southern hemisphere. The wind farm will provide enough electricity for 220,000 homes and is key to the nation’s new target of meeting 20 percent of its energy needs with renewable (more…)

What Wind Turbine 2.0 Will Look Like

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

I am coming to the conclusion that the wind turbines of today — hundreds of feet tall, sporting three blades, clustered in the cornfields like rotary clubs — will soon go the way of the Model T. Good for their day, but we’ve moved on.

I explored alternative designs in wind power for my latest “Innovate” column in Sierra magazine, and can report that 31 flavors of turbines are poised to engulf the plain ol’ vanilla version we know so well. It isn’t that anything’s so wrong with Old Reliable; it’s more that there’s categories of wind that a giant whirligig just can’t use. (more…)

Windation Promises Bird-Free Rooftop Wind Energy

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Windation Energy Systems has developed an urban-wind rooftop turbine designed for commercial and industrial buildings. Billed as “permit-ready” and “bird safe,” Windation’s 5 kW turbine resembles a commercial AC unit and leverages a proprietary vacuum system to purportedly amplify wind speed and boost energy output.  The company’s first installation is expected this quarter in Palo Alto, CA.

CleanTechies aimed four questions at CEO and founder Mark Sheikhrezai.

Turkish wind energy growing fast with feed-in-tariff in the pipeline

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Turkish-wind-energy-growing-feed-in-tariff-pipeline.jpgThe Turkish Statistical Institute announced that the Turkish economy shrank 13.8% and that the unemployment rate increased to 14.9% in the first quarter. Despite these difficult economic conditions, the Turkish wind industry is still one of the fastest growing industries in the country. One reason is that Turkey may face electricity shortages in the near future, furthermore Turkey has just ratified [the] Kyoto agreement which is going to result in carbon emission reduction targets for the post 2013 period.

Among other renewable resources, wind has been the most popular and most approachable power source in the last four years. The use of wind power started around 1,000-1,200 AD in Anatolia, as early as in other European countries. However, Turkey’s development throughout the centuries has not been as fast as that of its counterparts. At the time when Turkey installed its first 0.5 MW wind turbine in Izmir in 1998, Germany had already installed almost 3,000 MW.
